Headteacher’s Message

Dear Glebe Families

This week, we were treated to two truly exceptional Year 6 performances.  The talent and confidence on display were remarkable.  From the amazing solo performances and child-choreographed dance routines to the clear, strong stage presence and acting skills shown by our performers, every child should be incredibly proud of what they achieved.

A special well done must also go to our talented stage hands, set crew and musical director, whose hard work behind the scenes helped bring the production to life.  It was a fantastic team effort and a wonderful celebration of the many talents within our Year 6 cohort.

On Monday, the children enjoyed watching the football in school, creating a fantastic atmosphere across the day.  We’ve got everything crossed for another great result this weekend for the England team!

Looking ahead to next week, we are excited to see our budding iRock musicians take to the stage for their end-of-term performance.  We also look forward to our Year 6 children enjoying their leavers’ event on Friday – a special opportunity to celebrate the end of their primary school journey together.

Have a lovely weekend.

Warm regards

Mr Clarke

News from EYFS

This week in Reception, we have been enjoying the story The Duck in the Truck.  The children have been developing their understanding of adjectives by describing the duck and the muddy setting using exciting descriptive words.  We have also been thinking about how to structure a sentence, and the children used their ideas to write their own sentences about the story.

In Maths, we have been revising the concepts of one more and one less.  The children have been using their counting skills to find numbers that are one more or one less, and some have challenged themselves by working with numbers beyond 20.

We enjoyed taking part in a Road Safety Talk.  Thank you to all the parents and carers who were able to join us.  The children learned the Green Cross Code “Stop, Look, Listen, Think” and discussed why it is so important to stay safe when crossing the road.  They then had great fun putting their learning into practice on the pretend road, demonstrating how to cross safely and confidently.

News from the Resource Base

This week the children had three days in their new tiered approach, getting to know what it will look like in September.  It has been lovely to see them working in their ‘new’ set ups.  They have taken this on really well.

In the new RB group for English they have been learning and recapping about word classification.  This week their focus was on adjectives.  After creating a group word bank, the children wrote their own adjectives to describe an object of their choice.  They went on to write their own sentences, making an expanded noun phrase e.g. I can see a blue, shiny fan.

In Maths, the children were recapping and learning about place value.  This included counting on and back in tens from any 2 digit number.  As part of our learning we had to complete the sequences.  The children used the Tens and Ones headings to help them think carefully about which digit changed and whether it was getting bigger or smaller.

RBH: For the remainder of the week, the children have been working hard on writing their own story to go with our under the sea themed book with no words: ‘Flotsam’.  The children have been reading back over their work and thinking carefully about how they can improve their work.  They have been working hard to incorporate their skills learnt over the year, including: using apostrophes; expanded noun phrases; conjunctions and writing in the past tense.

In Maths, in mainstream and in RBH we have been recapping and reflecting on our learning about telling the time (in 5 minute increments) using an analogue clock as well as work around how many minutes in an hour and how many hours in a day.

RBR: Another week of transition has flown by, and the children have continued to adapt brilliantly to their new routines and environments, especially in the recent hot weather.  They have shown resilience, positivity, and maturity throughout the week, and we are incredibly proud of how well they have embraced the changes.

In Deaf Studies, the children have taken on the role of museum curators after receiving a very special letter:

“Congratulations!  You have been chosen as one of only four museum curators.  Your job is to create an exciting exhibition for The Deaf Experience Museum.  Your gallery should help visitors understand an important part of Deaf life.”

Inspired by their mission, the children have begun designing their own museum exhibits based on one of five key themes: Deaf Identity, Communication, Access & Technology, Community, and Culture & History.  Through research, creativity, and careful presentation, they are creating exhibitions that will help visitors understand and celebrate the richness and diversity of the Deaf community.  We look forward to displaying their finished exhibits very soon.

Influential Figure – Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was a talented Mexican artist whose colourful and imaginative paintings are admired around the world.  She used her artwork to express her feelings, experiences, and love of her culture, showing that art can be a powerful way to tell a story.  Despite facing many challenges in her life, Frida continued to create and inspire others with her resilience and creativity.  Her story encourages children to celebrate their individuality, express themselves with confidence, and value different cultures and perspectives.

Music Moment

Our music moment this week was Happy by Pharrell Williams.

Fortnightly Focus – Ambition

Our final fortnightly focus is on ambition – raising aspirations and helping every child believe in their future success.

Staff will encourage challenge, aspiration and opportunities that broaden horizons through the curriculum, enrichment and careers-related learning.

Pupils will focus on goal setting, confidence, independence and striving to achieve their personal best.

Parents play a key role by discussing future aspirations, celebrating success and encouraging perseverance.

This aligns with inspection priorities around personal development, curriculum ambition, equality of opportunity, preparation for next stages of education and ensuring all pupils are equipped for future success in modern Britain.

District Sports Report from Mr Acquah

On Friday 3 July, over 50 children proudly represented Glebe at the Castle Point Group 1 District Sports Athletics Championships, held at Garon Park in Southend.

This year’s competition was especially significant for Glebe, as we made our Group 1 debut after winning the Group 2 event last year.  We joined six other outstanding schools, making it a highly competitive event featuring seven of the district’s strongest athletics teams.

Throughout the day, our pupils competed with determination, resilience and excellent sportsmanship.  Every child gave their very best, and many demonstrated outstanding team spirit by taking part in events that were not necessarily their favourites in order to maximise the team’s overall performance.  Their willingness to put the team first was commendable and reflected the values we strive to promote at Glebe.

Against such strong opposition, our athletes more than held their own, producing a number of impressive individual and team performances.  By the end of the competition, Glebe had secured a very creditable fourth place finish.  This excellent result not only reflects the hard work and commitment of our pupils but also ensures that we retain our place in the Group 1 competition for next year.

We would like to congratulate every child who represented the school.  Their effort, attitude and support for one another throughout the day made us immensely proud.

Finally, a huge thank you to all the parents and carers who attended in such great numbers to cheer on our athletes.  Your encouragement and enthusiastic support helped create a fantastic atmosphere and was greatly appreciated by both the children and staff.

Well done, Team Glebe!  We couldn’t be prouder.

Achievements

On Friday, Blossom in Year 4 took part in this year’s Summer Gala with her Chelmsford Riverside Ice Skating Club in support of Kids Inspire.

As well as helping to raise money for this wonderful charity, the gala gave every skater the opportunity to perform their programme in front of a live audience.  This was Blossom’s very first gala performance, and what a fantastic achievement it was!

Blossom is already looking forward to rehearsing for the next gala in December.  We are incredibly proud of her dedication, confidence and hard work.  Well done, Blossom – what a fantastic opportunity and a brilliant achievement!

A huge well done to Tommy in Reception, who has been awarded a medal and a Silver Turtle Certificate for his fantastic progress in swimming lessons.

Tommy is incredibly proud of his achievement, and so are we!

Keep up the brilliant work – we can’t wait to see what you achieve next.

On Sunday 5 July, Elsie in Year 4 took part in her gymnastics club’s in-house competition, performing alongside her squad across three events: floor, vault and trampette.

The scores from each event were combined to give an overall result for every gymnast.  Elsie had a brilliant time, performing with confidence, having fun with her friends and sharing lots of smiles throughout the day.  It was also lovely that her family and her friend Eliza were there to cheer her on!  We’re delighted to share that Elsie achieved 1st place overall in her level!  Alongside her participation medal, she was also presented with her Gold medal and trophy.

We are incredibly proud of you, Elsie. Your hard work, determination and growing confidence have shone through all year, and this was the perfect way to celebrate the end of a fantastic year of gymnastics.

Well done, Elsie – what an amazing achievement!

Year 6 Performances

This week, we were treated to two truly exceptional Year 6 performances, and what a show they were!

The talent, confidence and enthusiasm on display were remarkable.  From outstanding solo performances and child-choreographed dance routines to confident stage presence and brilliant acting, every single performer should be incredibly proud of what they achieved.

A special congratulations also goes to our talented stage hands, set crew and musical director.  Your hard work behind the scenes helped bring the production to life, and we couldn’t have done it without you.  It was a fantastic team effort and a wonderful celebration of the creativity, dedication and talent within our Year 6 cohort.

Well done to everyone involved – we are so proud of you all!

Summer Reading Challenge

Around 52% of children experience a drop in reading progress over the summer, and this can mean they lose up to 20% of reading gains made during the previous school year.  However, reading just five books over the summer holiday can lead to four months of reading progress.  Reading regularly over summer can also help address the poverty gap; more than half of the reading achievement gap between low and middle income children is linked to differences in summer reading.

For these reasons, we encourage as many children as possible to do the Summer Reading Challenge – Read to the Beat – which asks participants to aim at reading six books over the summer, as well as offering an interesting range of related activities and events.
