At Glebe Primary School we are passionate about ensuring all children become confident and enthusiastic readers and writers. We believe that phonics provides the foundations of learning to make the development into fluent reading and writing easier.
Through daily, systematic and consistent high quality phonics teaching, children learn to segment words to support their spelling ability and blend sounds to read words.
At Glebe, we use Twinkl Phonics as our Systematic, Synthetic Phonics Programme (SSP). It is high quality and robust in its purpose and offers a clear, structured progression through the programme. The Twinkl Phonics approach combines rigorous progression with engaging learning activities. We believe that children learn best when they are enjoying their learning and that this comes from a mix of bright, fun lesson resources within a clear and systematic approach that builds children’s phonological knowledge daily.
During the lessons, children will recall of GPCs and tricky/common exception words; each day, they will experience blending and segmenting activities to allow regular practise of these core skills. Stories are used to provide a stimulus and context for the phonics teaching in Twinkl Phonics lessons.
Using Twinkl Phonics the children learn to read fluently so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. We passionately believe that teaching children to read and write independently is one of the core purposes of a primary school enabling them to access a broad and exciting curriculum and ensuring they flourish as learners throughout their time at our school. These fundamental skills not only hold the keys to the rest of the curriculum but also have a huge impact on children’s self-esteem, as we believe it underpins and aids effective communication.
Within our curriculum and culture, we promote our LEARN values. The promotion of these values is no exception, in our prioritising of reading.
Twinkl experts have delivered whole School training in the Twinkl Phonics Programme. In addition, bespoke training has been provided to all staff delivering individual phases of the programme and Codebreakers Catch up. Regular monitoring of the delivery of the programme and assessment of high-quality phonics sessions are integral to the success of our children. Regular and robust tracking of pupil progress helps us to review the impact of our Phonics programme. Each year we provide parent workshops so that parents can support the teaching of phonics at home.
We provide opportunities to apply phonic knowledge through decodable reading books and books for enjoyment. There are regular opportunities to apply phonic knowledge in reading and writing. As a result our learners are more confident when blending and segmenting words for reading and spelling. In June 2023 88% of Yr1 pass their Phonics Screening Check.
We deliver an ambitious phonics curriculum that has it’s foundations in Nursery, where children learn environmental sounds and then build upon discreet letter sounds/digraphs and trigraphs in Key Stage 1. The children will use their skills of blending and segmenting as they enter KS2 as a strategy for reading and spelling.
To ensure success for all, any children who need support with their phonics in KS2 receive daily reading opportunities and will participate in our Codebreakers catch up groups.

You see, we love reading so much that we’ve teamed up with the Department for Education’s Reading Framework to make sure we’re super readers! That means we’re like reading superheroes, learning all the cool tricks to understand stories better and become awesome readers.
Our teachers are like reading wizards who sprinkle magic dust on our books to make them even more fun! They’re always learning new ways to help us become fantastic readers. Plus, we have loads of fun activities and special books to help us on our reading adventures.
