Headteacher’s Message

Dear Glebe Families

It has been another enriching week in school.  As many of you will have seen on our social media, pupils have enjoyed some exciting football matches, showing great teamwork and sportsmanship. We were also delighted to welcome work experience students from Sweyne Park School, alongside colleagues from their Resource Base, who spent time working with our children – an experience that was beneficial for all involved.

On Thursday, our Resource Base had some very special visitors of the animal kind, as ducklings arrived and brought great excitement and curiosity to the children.  Meanwhile, Mrs Rose gave the Senior Leadership Team a tour of our Nursery and Early Years provision.  It was a wonderful opportunity to see first-hand the vibrant, engaging environment we provide and how we embed strong foundations for our youngest learners – truly a dynamic space.

Looking ahead to next week, please remember that Monday 4 May is the Bank Holiday, and we hope you enjoy the long weekend and some good weather.  We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Tuesday.

Year 1 will be heading off on their Call of the Wild zoo trip on Tuesday – an experience we know they will thoroughly enjoy.  We are also looking forward to welcoming families into school for Class 4A’s parent lunch on Wednesday and Class 5R’s parent lunch on Friday.  Year 2 have their Florence Nightingale workshop on Thursday, so a busy week ahead is planned!

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.  Enjoy the weekend!

Warm regards

Mr Clarke

News from EYFS

We’ve continued our exciting “Under the Sea” theme with a range of engaging and imaginative activities!

The children really enjoyed the story “Underwater Cleaning Spree”, where we explored the importance of keeping our oceans and seas clean.  They demonstrated great awareness of litter and took part in thoughtful discussions about which items can be recycled.

We also had lots of fun with the story “Billy’s Bucket”, using our imaginations to discover all sorts of amazing underwater creatures.  It was wonderful to hear the children using such rich and descriptive vocabulary during this activity.

In Maths, we’ve been exploring how numbers change.  We practised adding one more to a number, thinking carefully about how many we started with and how many we had after adding more objects.  We then moved on to subtraction – working out how many we had to begin with, how many were taken away, and how many remained.  The children particularly enjoyed acting this out on our pretend bus!

Creatively, we’ve been very busy painting, making paper chain tentacles, and creating fantastic octopus artwork, with support from our wonderful Sweyne Park School work experience students.

News from the Resource Base

RBH: In English we have started our new topic on Biographies.  The children have looked at the features of a Biography and identified them, using a coloured key.  We have also ordered a Biography which had been chopped up.  We were lucky enough, on Thursday, to have real life ducks visit the class so we have made notes in preparation for our class Biography on one of the ducks.  Will it be Donald or Daisy?

In Maths, we have continued our topic on measurement.  We have worked on word problems, about mass, using the four operations.  The children have also worked on capacity this week, starting with comparing the capacity of containers, using < > and =.  They have also looked at reading scales with millilitres (ml) and litres (l).

RBR: This week we have completed our fractions unit.  The children have worked incredibly hard throughout and should feel very proud of the progress they have made.  We are now looking forward to moving on to our next topic: decimals.

In English, we have been focusing on key grammar skills, including the present and past perfect tense and understanding determiners.  The children will be applying these skills in their upcoming narrative writing.

On Thursday, we were lucky enough to welcome Annie’s ducks into school.  The children had the opportunity to feed, stroke, and hold Donald and Daisy, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  We will be using this as inspiration for upcoming writing, where the children can choose to create a descriptive piece, a persuasive text, or a diary entry.

It has been a fantastic week, with lots of enthusiasm and memorable learning experiences.

Influential Figure – Mae Jemison

Mae Jemison is an inspiring scientist and astronaut who became the first African American woman to travel into space.  She worked hard in school, especially in science and medicine, before joining NASA and achieving her dream.  Mae Jemison’s story shows children that curiosity, determination, and a love of learning can open up exciting opportunities.  She also helps us understand how people from different backgrounds bring valuable skills and ideas that help us explore and better understand our world and beyond.

Music Moment

Our music moment this week was The Script – Hall of Fame.

Fortnightly Focus – Ambition

As we continue to develop our focus on ambition across the school, we are thinking carefully about how this shapes every aspect of your child’s experience.  We want all pupils to feel confident that they can achieve highly, and this is reflected in the expectations we set for behaviour, effort, and attitudes to learning in every lesson.  Strong attendance and punctuality remain a key priority, as being in school every day and ready to learn is essential for success.

We are also committed to broadening pupils’ horizons by providing experiences that inspire them and raise their aspirations beyond their immediate surroundings.  Across the school, leaders and staff work together to promote a culture of high expectations, ensuring that ambition is at the heart of everything we do.  Importantly, this applies to all pupils, including those who may need additional support, so that every child is encouraged and enabled to fulfil their potential.

Achievements

We are immensely proud of Ayla in Year 3!  Last weekend, she took the initiative to bake and decorate cupcakes and flapjacks, which she then sold on Sunday at her grandparents’ allotment.  Ayla created her own posters, confidently engaged with the community, handled money by giving correct change, and even worked out her total fundraising earnings herself.

Thanks to her hard work and kindness, Ayla raised an amazing £92.24 for two charities she chose: Coeliac UK and The British Heart Foundation.  How truly fabulous and selfless she is – we couldn’t be prouder!

Year 3/4 Football Match Report from Mr Acquah

After a number of cancellations due to inclement weather, the Year 3/4 football team finally managed to play a match against Down Hall School.

From the opening whistle, Down Hall showed determination, looking to impose themselves early with purposeful pressing and confident passing. However, we quickly found our rhythm, demonstrating sharp passing, intelligent movement, and strong organisation across the pitch.

Our quality began to shine midway through the first half, when a well-worked attacking move led to the opening goal. That breakthrough lifted the entire team, and confidence grew as we controlled possession and dictated the flow of the game.

In the second half, both teams continued to play positively. The opposition created a few promising moments, but Glebe’s defence remained solid, and our goalkeeper produced an outstanding save to keep the score at 1-0. From there, it was all Glebe – three more goals followed in quick succession.

As the final whistle blew, the 4-0 scoreline was a fair reflection of Glebe’s dominance. Played in glorious weather and in front of appreciative spectators, it was a match that highlighted the very best of behaviour and sportsmanship.

A big thank you to the parents and carers who supported with transport to and from Down Hall.

Resource Base – Visit from Donald and Daisy!

Yesterday morning, Annie in Year 5, along with her parents, kindly took the time to bring in their 6-week-old ducks for the Resource Base children to experience.

Annie explained how she cares for them at home, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed holding, stroking, and feeding the ducks.  It was a wonderful hands-on learning opportunity for all involved – the children had a truly quacking time!

A big thank you to Annie and her parents for giving the children the chance to meet Donald and Daisy – they were a huge hit!
