Headteacher’s Message

Dear Glebe Families

What a wonderful end to the half term!  Yesterday’s parents’ evening was a true highlight, it was fantastic to see so many of you engaging with your children’s progress and sharing such kind and supportive comments.  Thank you for your ongoing partnership; it really makes a difference.

This week, we also held our progress meetings, where teachers had the opportunity to discuss how well they know your children and their unique learning styles.  The dedication and insight from our staff are inspiring, and I’m grateful to them all for their hard work in supporting every child’s growth.

On a more bittersweet note, we said farewell to Mrs Anderson, who retired after an incredible 27 years at Glebe.  She will be sorely missed by all of us.  Reflecting on her long tenure brought to mind a British music moment from 27 years ago, when Blur and Oasis famously kicked off the Britpop rivalry in 1993!  (Sorry, Mrs Anderson, for making it all feel that much longer!)  Her commitment and care have left a lasting legacy in our community.

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable two-week break.  We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the next half term.

Warm regards

Mr Clarke

News from the Resource Base

In maths this week we have been looking at how to use mental strategies to answer questions on addition and subtraction of large numbers.  In English the children have completed their information text on the animal of their choice and we’re now looking at how to vary our sentence starters to make our creative writing more interesting.

I am delighted to be able to say that Leo Miles has passed his BSL 101 assessment for BSL Level 1 qualification, which evaluates the ability to use basic British Sign Language in everyday situations.  In passing this assessment he has shown proficiency in basic communication, directions and everyday vocabulary.  Well done, Leo!

In RBN, the children have been enjoying our text ‘Gregory Cool’ and researching a destination for their own story in the style we are learning.  They have chosen different countries and have researched traditional clothes and food, the climate and the language spoken there.  On our return after half term, the children will be creating their own text map ready to rehearse and write their marvellous, creative story from an unfamiliar setting.  Maths has been challenging this week.  The addition and subtraction has required the children to cross tens boundaries by applying their knowledge of number facts.  They have had to calculate to the nearest ten and then complete the remainder of the addition or subtraction.  The children have truly shown our value of resilience and tried their hardest.  Well done RBN, you truly deserve a half term rest!

In RBS the children have been enjoying learning Paddington’s diary.  Today they wrote their own diary entry putting into practice everything they have learnt, including writing in the first person and in the past tense!  We have started a new topic in maths, addition and subtraction.  We have learnt about fact families and related facts.

News from EYFS

This week, the children in Reception have been learning all about Diwali, the Festival of Lights.  We listened to the story of Rama and Sita, exploring the themes of good triumphing over evil and the importance of light in the celebrations.

The children also enjoyed learning how people celebrate Diwali with lights, decorations, food, and family traditions.  The children took part in a range of creative activities including making firework art using toilet rolls and glitter, designing Mendhi (henna) hand patterns and creating colourful Rangoli patterns using flower petals.

This week in maths, the children have been exploring the numbers 1, 2, and 3.  They’ve been working on counting objects carefully, ensuring they understand the concept of 1:1 correspondence, where each object is counted once.  The children have also enjoyed going on a number hunt around the environment, searching for these numbers in everyday objects and places.  We’ve also been thinking about what happens when we add ‘one more’ to a number, using lots of practical activities to help the children begin to understand number patterns and early addition.

Fortnightly Focus – Independence, Resilience and Opportunity

At Glebe, we are committed to helping every child grow into a confident, capable and successful learner.  This fortnight, our focus across school is centred on three key priorities that are at the heart of excellent teaching and learning:

Increasing Independence

We want our pupils to develop the confidence to try things for themselves and take ownership of their learning.  For some children, especially those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), this means using well-planned support and scaffolding that helps them move towards doing things more independently.  Our aim is to support without creating dependence, so that all children feel proud of what they can achieve on their own.

Building Resilience

Mistakes are part of learning, and we want our children to know that it’s okay to get things wrong, as long as they keep going.  Resilience means bouncing back, staying positive, and learning from challenges.  In school, we help build resilience by encouraging a “have a go” attitude and celebrating effort just as much as outcomes.

Creating Opportunity

Every child at Glebe deserves the chance to succeed, whatever their starting point.  That means making sure lessons are adapted thoughtfully, expectations remain high, and all pupils are given the opportunities they need to shine.  This is especially important for our SEND pupils, who may need different ways to show what they know and can do.

These priorities are closely aligned with the UNICEF Rights of the Child, including:

Article 23 – Every child with a disability has the right to special care and support.

Article 29 – Education must develop every child’s talents and abilities to the full.

Great Athletes Visit – Monday 3 November

Mrs Howard’s Half Term Art Challenge

The children have been learning about Pablo Picasso and observing some of his famous artworks.  We noticed that he often used bright, bold colours; facial features are sometimes in unusual places; he drew faces from a range of angles; and he often created portraits of people and animals.

Mrs Howard has asked the children in Years 1 to 6 to create their own piece of artwork inspired by Picasso, if they wish to participate.  Below are some examples of work.  They could choose to link their piece to Halloween or base it on any other person or animal.  She has also included The Weeping Woman by Picasso as inspiration.

The children may use paint, colouring pencils, collage materials, or any other resources they choose.

Completed pieces can be returned to Mrs Howard on Friday 7 November.

In addition, here are some websites showcasing events taking place in various art galleries across London during the half term.  Most are free, but please note that some may have a cost.
