Headteacher’s Message

Dear Glebe Families

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a restful and enjoyable break and that the start of 2025 brings you joy and good health.  As we enter this new term, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on our New Year’s resolutions.  Whether it’s committing to a new habit, learning something new, or simply continuing to give our best, resolutions often require resilience and stamina.  I wish you all the very best of luck in sticking to yours, perseverance is key!

This term promises to be a busy one for our school community.  We’re kicking things off with Year 3 parent lunches, a wonderful opportunity for parents to join us in the school and experience lunchtime with their children.  It’s always a lovely event and we look forward to seeing you there!

I’m also delighted to introduce Mrs Ryan, our new Teacher of the Deaf, who has joined our team.  She brings a wealth of experience and is already making a positive impact in her role.  We are so pleased to have her with us.

I would like to take a moment to thank you all for your support as we navigated the recent challenges of losing our dear Henry.  It has been a difficult time for our whole school community and your kindness and understanding have been deeply appreciated.  We continue to cherish the memories and impact that Henry left on us all.

Thank you again for your ongoing support.  I look forward to all the exciting learning and growth that will unfold this term.  Together, we will make it a great one!

Warm regards

Mr Clarke

Fortnightly Focus: Tolerance – Identifying and Helping Those Who Are Left Out

This fortnight, we are focusing on tolerance and what it means to be kind and understanding to everyone.  Sometimes, people feel left out because they are different or because others don’t include them.  But it’s important to remember that everyone deserves to feel like they belong.

Here’s what we can do:

  1. Look Around – Keep an eye out for anyone who might be sitting alone or not joining in with others.  It could be because they’re new, shy, or simply feel different.
  2. Reach Out – If you notice someone being left out, you can be the one to help!  Ask them to join in, sit with them, or simply smile and say “hello.”  Small acts of kindness can make a big difference.
  3. Be an Ally – If you see someone being treated unfairly, stand up for them.  Let them know they are not alone.  You can be a friend by supporting others, even when it’s not easy.
  4. Celebrate Differences – Everyone has unique qualities and that’s what makes us all special.  Embrace the things that make others different.  Ask questions, learn and be open-minded.  When we celebrate differences, we build a world where everyone feels accepted.

Let’s be the ones who notice when others are left out and step in to help.  Together, we can make our school a place where everyone feels included, valued and loved!

Music Moment of the Week

This week we have been listening to Rise Up by Andra Day, a song highlighting the importance of our core value, Resilience.  .

Influential Figure of the Week

Stephen William Hawking was a celebrated cosmologist and physicist who published ground breaking research.

He was born in 1942 and died in 2018 aged 76.  For most of his adult life, he had Motor-Neurone Disease.  This caused lots of mobility issues and made it hard for him to speak.

His 1988 book A Brief History of Time was a bestseller.  It discussed the origins of the universe and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.  For more interesting facts: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/blog/stephen-hawking-facts-for-kids.

School census day is Thursday 16 January 2025.  This is an important day for all schools as funding is calculated on this day.

As a result, the food menu for Thursday 16 January for all pupils will be the menu below.

Achievements

Lottie and Jack in Year 3 both completed their Scout’s Bronze Award before moving up to Cubs, the highest award Beavers can get.  Well done to both!

NHS Pharmacy First Service

Please find below some information about NHS Pharmacy First which takes away the potential delay of having to wait for a GP appointment and help ensure children and staff get well and return to school as quickly as possible, potentially positively impacting attendance figures.

Punctuality

Punctuality is important!  If a child misses the start of the day they can miss work and do not spend time with their class teacher getting vital information and news for the day.  Late arriving pupils also disrupt lessons, can be embarrassing for the child and can also encourage absence.  Good time-keeping is a vital life skill which will help our children as they progress through their school life and out into the wider world.  Lateness can also put pressure on the office team at what is an already busy time of the day.

The school day starts at 8.40am for Lower School and 8.45am for Upper School.  Please be reminded that children arriving late are required to come in to school via the main office to sign into our late book and provide a reason for their lateness which is recorded.  If your child has a persistent late record you may be contacted by the attendance team or may incur a penalty charge.  Please remember that you can approach us at any time if you are having problems getting your child to school on time.  We expect parents and staff to encourage good punctuality by being good role models to our children and celebrate good class and individual punctuality.

Year 5 Girls

Westcliff High School for Girls are extremely excited to present their Becoming…2025 programme for all curious and ambitious Year 5 girls.

Please find below a letter which details their programme of events and workshops over the course of the Spring and Summer terms of 2025.  The ‘Becoming… sessions are aimed at giving the girls a taste of what daily life is like at WHSG through some fun classroom introductions whilst the 11+ familiarisation sessions will be more focussed on what might appear in the paper, exam skills and key concepts.

The links to book can be found on the letter.  Places are limited, so we do encourage early booking to secure a space.  Should any pupils be in receipt of pupil premium, places will be free.  Parents/carers of those students will need to email finance@whsg.info to secure their place.
