Headteacher’s Message

Dear Glebe Families

It’s been a wonderfully lively week at school.  Our KS1 and Lower KS2 children were treated to a fantastic theatre production of The Railway Children.  The performance really captured their imaginations – there was song and moments of real suspense.  It’s always amazing to see the children so engaged and inspired by live productions.

We also marked Red Nose Day in true Glebe style, with a sea of red and some brilliantly “shocking” shirts on display!  The children always embrace these themed days with such enthusiasm, and it was lovely to see their sense of humour shining through while supporting a good cause.

I spent today at the annual Essex Headteachers’ Conference, where we explored the growing role of AI in education, how best to support children’s learning in a post-pandemic world, and gained further clarity around the legal aspects of attendance.  It was a valuable opportunity to reflect on how we continue to provide the very best for our pupils here at Glebe.

It was also fantastic to see Mrs Ryan’s Resource Base class heading off on their trip to Colchester Zoo.  The children had a wonderful time exploring the different habitats, learning about animals from around the world, and making meaningful links to their classroom learning.  Trips like these really help bring the curriculum to life.

Looking ahead to next week, I can hardly believe it’s already the final week of term!  On Tuesday, our iRock musicians will be donning their rock gear and performing – always a highlight and something we all look forward to.  Year 2 will also be visiting RHS Hyde Hall in Chelmsford, where they’ll be exploring seasonal changes, plants, and habitats as part of their Science and Geography learning.  It’s a lovely opportunity for hands-on experiences in a beautiful setting.

Wishing you all a lovely and restful weekend.

Warm regards

Mr Clarke

News from EYFS

This week in Reception, the children have been very excited to explore our topic of ‘Big Beasts’ -Dinosaurs!  They have thoroughly enjoyed drawing their own dinosaurs and have been developing their writing skills by adding labels to describe their creations.  We have also been learning about dinosaur fossils, carefully observing them and discussing what they can tell us about the past.  The children particularly enjoyed creating their own fossils using playdough, which was a fun and hands-on way to deepen their understanding.  In addition, we have been using language related to size to compare different dinosaurs, helping to build both vocabulary and understanding.

In Maths, the children have continued to develop their understanding of numbers to 10.  We have been learning about doubles to 10 and beginning to explore which numbers are odd and even.  Through the use of practical resources, the children have been learning that even numbers can be shared equally into two groups, while odd numbers cannot.  The children have shown great enthusiasm throughout and are becoming increasingly confident when working with numbers.

During PE, we have made the most of the sunshine by taking our learning outdoors.  The children have been practising their listening skills, following instructions carefully and responding promptly to signals.  They have also been developing their ability to travel safely and move into space within a larger outdoor environment, learning how to be aware of others around them.  It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they explore movement in a fun and active way.

News from the Resource Base

RB: Last week we were lucky enough to have an ex-pupil (Mr Gibbons) visit us, during our deaf studies lesson.  This week we reviewed and reflected on our experience.  The children asked a range of interesting questions linked to his life, growing up as a deaf child and his experience as a deaf adult.

RBH: This week the children have worked hard on their assessments.  As part of our assessments, in English the children have written their own story about their lost animal.  They also worked hard completing their reading and SPaG assessments.

In Maths, they completed their arithmetic and reasoning papers.  We also continued activities linked to multiplication, using repeated addition.

RBR: This week has been assessment week in RBR.  The children have worked incredibly hard and shown great focus and determination to do the best they can – we are very proud of their efforts.

We were then lucky to enjoy a well-deserved treat after such a busy and challenging start to the week – our visit to Colchester Zoo!  It was a wonderful experience for the children, giving them the opportunity to see a wide range of animals up close and deepen their understanding of habitats, conservation, and animal behaviour.  The trip also provided a fantastic chance for the children to develop their independence, social skills, and curiosity outside of the classroom.

RBN: The children have worked incredibly hard this week for their English and Maths assessments.  They have truly made you, themselves and us proud.  Keep up the hard work RBN.

We have also been reading The Creakers and The Woman Who Won Things.  This has allowed enjoyment of texts, having a go at reading and understanding more challenging texts and provided relaxation alongside learning after a busy week of testing.

Football Match Reports from Mr Acquah

Year 5/6 Boys versus Edward Francis

Under the lights and in front of a buzzing crowd, it was a truly pulsating match that delivered everything you could hope for – intensity, quality, and drama from start to finish.  Both teams played exceptionally well, showcasing skill, determination, and a real desire to win.

Coming into the game, the opposition had been in formidable form, having won every match this season and conceding just two goals.  That record alone spoke volumes about the challenge ahead, but our side rose to it brilliantly, refusing to be overawed.

The game swung back and forth, with both teams creating chances and testing each other’s defences.  Every goal felt hard-earned, and neither side was willing to give an inch.  When we found ourselves pushing for a crucial second goal, it came in spectacular fashion – H produced a moment of pure brilliance, finishing with a fantastic back-heeled effort that left everyone watching in awe.

As the final whistle blew with the score locked at 2-2, there was a strong sense of pride.  Not only had both teams contributed to a thrilling contest, but we had also become the first side this season to take points off such a dominant opponent.  It was a performance full of character and quality – one that sets a strong benchmark for the games ahead.

Year 5/6 Girls versus Edward Francis

Last week, our girls faced off against Edward Francis in an exciting match that showcased their remarkable progress.  Although they narrowly lost 1-0, it was clear to all watching just how much improvement they have made in such a short period of time.

From passing and positioning to teamwork and determination, the girls showed significant growth compared to previous games.  With a few more focused training sessions, there’s no doubt that they will soon become a force to reckon with on the pitch.

Well done to all the players for their hard work and dedication – the future looks very bright for this team!

Year 3/4 versus Rayleigh Primary

Our Year 3/4 team faced a tough match against a well-drilled Rayleigh Primary side.  With no prior training sessions, the team relied heavily on their individual skills to navigate the game.

Despite their best efforts, the match ended in a 7-2 defeat.  However, the score line doesn’t tell the full story – the players showed great spirit, determination, and most importantly, enjoyed themselves throughout the game.

It was a valuable experience for the team, and with some focused training, they are sure to develop into an even stronger side.
